Village centennial celebration plans underway
Volunteers are planning for the village of Silver Lake's 100th birthday celebration in 2018.
Silver Lake was incorporated as a village in 1918.
Nancy Gray is chairing the centennial committee. Upcoming events include a 5K run and possibly a kids' run on June 3, a pancake breakfast and mum sale on Sept. 23 and a golf outing at Silver Lake Country Club on Oct. 2. Commemorative bricks are being sold throughout the year for a landscape project envisioned at the gazebo, said Mayor Bernie Hovey. Residents can pick up a form at Village Hall or access them by visiting the village's website at villageofsilverlake.com and clicking on the "Centennial" tab.
Other upcoming events -- some happening this summer and some happening next year -- include an art show, a rocket camp for children, concerts at the gazebo and historical society programs, according to Hovey. The culmination of the centennial celebration will occur with an event at the country club in early October 2018 that would be a cocktail party followed possibly by a dance, dinner, concert or talent show.
The centennial committee meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. in Village Hall, 2961 Kent Road. Anyone who is interested in helping out is welcome to attend.
