Glucose, cholesterol screenings in Falls Oct. 12, 13

Akron General Community Access & Wellness offers regularly scheduled low-cost bone, glucose and cholesterol screenings throughout the community, including the following dates in September:

Oct. 12, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Acme Fresh Market, 2630 Bailey Road, Cuyahoga Falls

Oct. 13, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Klein's, 2015 State Road, Cuyahoga Falls

To measure LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, be sure to fast for at least 12 hours. No appointments required. Free parking is provided. Cholesterol and blood glucose screenings are done by a finger-stick test. The bone density screening is a fast, painless ultrasound.

Costs vary depending upon the combination of tests ordered. Call 330-665-8248 with questions. A schedule with complete dates, times and locations for the year is available at the front desk of each of the Akron General health and wellness centers or at akrongeneral.org/screenings.

Falls church hosts spaghetti dinner to help

Good Neighbors

St. John's Episcopal Church, 2220 Second St., is presenting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to benefit Cuyahoga Falls Good Neighbors on Oct. 11 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Free will donations will be accepted. Proceeds will go toward the Good Neighbors General Fund.

Zane's Foundation Inc. hosts meeting Oct. 11

Zane's Foundation Inc. invites community members to its meeting on Oct. 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Church in Silver Lake, 2951 Kent Road, Silver Lake, 44224, Fellowship Hall.

Judy Marks, a parent advocate from Out of the Box Behavioral Solutions, will give a presentation called "Transitions 101."

Participants will gain knowledge that transition is an IEP (Individual Education Plan) is a results oriented process. Participants will also gain knowledge and understanding of how a student's preferences, interests, needs and strengths (PINS) will and should drive their services. Lastly, participants will learn why transition planning early is important for successful post-secondary outcome successes; backwards planning. Join the group and Judy for this fast-educational workshop on transition.

Falls Fire Chief will speak with

historical society Oct. 12

Cuyahoga Falls Fire Chief Paul Moledor will be the speaker for the Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Sutliff Meeting Room at the Cuyahoga Falls Library.

Chief Moledor will talking about the history of the Cuyahoga Falls Fire Department. The program is free and open to the public.

Civil War

Roundtable meets Oct. 12

Author and lecturer Harold George will speak on "Ohio in the American Civil War" on Oct. 12 at the Peninsula Library. Sponsored by the Cuyahoga Valley Civil War Round Table, the 7:30 p.m. talk is free and open to the public.

Cuyahoga Falls sent 200 men to the war. Over 160 are buried in Oakwood Cemetery. George will be participating in the 150th Anniversary Celebration of Oakwood Cemetery's Civil War Monument on the morning of Oct. 29.

Haven of Rest fall banquet is Oct. 18

Each year, Haven of Rest Ministries of Akron hosts regional banquets to make the public aware of the programs and services the organization provides.

There are many reasons why individuals end up homeless or in other crisis situations: job loss, addictions and family problems. Those who attend the banquet will hear testimonies of how lives are being restored through this ministry.

This year's Hudson regional banquet will take place at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at Hilton Garden Inn, 8971 Wilcox Drive, Twinsburg. The banquet is open to everyone 18 years of age and older. Tickets are free, however, reservations are required.

Oct. 22

spaghetti dinner benefits Shop with a Cop

The Cuyahoga Falls Moose will host a spaghetti dinner on Oct. 22 from 5-8 p.m. to raise money for the Cuyahoga Falls Shop with a Cop program. All proceeds from the dinner will go toward this community program that enables Cuyahoga Falls police officers to take needy children Christmas shopping.

The Moose Club is located at 4444 State Road. For more information, call the Moose at 330-928-6323. There is a donation cost for the dinner.

Raffle tickets are also being sold to benefit Shop with a Cop. Prizes include dinner for four at Silver Lake Country Club, a flat screen TV and a $100 Visa gift card. Tickets will be sold at the spaghetti dinner. They can also be purchased at the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department or from Police Chief Jack Davis.

St. Joseph


Society sets card party Oct. 27

St. Joseph of Cuyahoga Falls Altar and Rosary Society Annual Fall Card Party will be Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. in Jones Hall (the gymnasium), located one block south of Broad Boulevard on Second Street.

There is a per person admission cost; pre-sale tickets only, includes light supper, dessert and beverage.

Friends of Cuyahoga Falls Library

accepting donations

The Friends of Cuyahoga Falls Library at 2015 Third St. are accepting donations.

The Friends' book sale is Nov. 3, 4 and 5.

Most donated items are offered to the public at Friends' book sales. Leftover book sale items are offered to area non-profit agencies or recycled.

Donations can be dropped down the chute at the north end of the building or brought through the main entrance during operating hours and left in a specially marked bin.

Items accepted for donation: Fiction/non-fiction hard cover and paperback books. CDs, DVDs, puzzles and books on CD.

Items not accepted: Any item that is incomplete, chewed, smelly, moldy, torn. Records, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, encyclopedias, magazines, newspapers.

Receipts are available in the main office. The Friends cannot assign a dollar amount to a donation.

Society 2016

annual photography contest

Get your best digital photos ready for the annual Cuyahoga Valley National Park Photography Contest. Sponsored by the Cuyahoga Valley Photographic Society, the contest will be accepting digital entries through Nov. 3.

Awards will be presented on Nov. 17 at Happy Days Lodge. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the awards program will begin at 7 p.m.

Campus Camera gift cards will be awarded to first-, second-, and third-place winners, in each of four categories. A special award will be presented to the Tim Thomas Best in Show entrant. Categories include: Landscape; Animals and Insects; Plants and Flowers; and Black and White or Monochrome.

The photo contest is free for members of the Cuyahoga Valley Photographic Society. There is a small fee per photo for non-member submissions.

Falls Lions Club meets fourth

Thursdays of month

The Cuyahoga Falls Lions Club meets for lunch at 12:10 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month at On Tap Restaurant on State Road on the fourth Thursday of the month for a dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Papa Joe's Restaurant in the valley.
