A groundbreaking ceremony to mark the removal and opening of the pedestrian mall on Front Street will take place April 24 from 5:30-6:15 p.m.

The program will take place at 2085 Front St. near the Falls River Square pavilion.

Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Walters, City Council members, as well as other public officials and private stakeholders will be in attendance.

City Council recently voted to approve the $13 million conversion of Front Street to allow vehicular traffic in a pedestrian-friendly configuration by removing the mall that was installed in the 1970s. The plans call for additional retail space and improved parking.

The design will convert Front Street to a "curving, pedestrian-friendly streetscape," according to a city news release.

The redevelopment will include a boutique hotel that is slated to open by summer 2018.

As part of the Front Street redevelopment, the city approved reconditioning its three on-site parking garages. The three parking garages combined with improved street parking will provide more than 750 parking spaces available in the new downtown.

The public is invited to attend.
